The Quest Begins

Welcome to the JPII Library Quest!

The John Paul II Library staff would like to welcome you to campus.  We know this is a very exciting time in your life.  It will take some time for you to become acclimated to campus and our staff would like to take this opportunity to help you become familiar with the library.

In order to do this, we have developed the "JPII Library Quest." You should bring your student ID card and a pen with you to the library. This blog will give you directions on how to begin the search for clues.  These clues will lead you to find the answer to each "quest question."

The clues will lead you to find a famous person in Franciscan University's history.  In many ways, this person was "a head" of their time.
You may begin the quest on Tuesday, September 3 and it must be completed on Tuesday, September 10.  No answer forms will be accepted after closing by September 10.

Any incoming freshman student who participates in the quest and answers the quest questions correctly, will have their names entered into a drawing for one of four $25.00 Franciscan University bookstore gift cards.

If at any time you need assistance, please feel free to see a library staff member.

JPII Library Quest- Step 1

Please read the following statement:

Franciscan University follows the example of St. Francis of Assisi in finding its identity at the heart of the Catholic Church.  We embrace the teachings of Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterium with a spirit of Christian humanism that relates all learning to Jesus Christ. At Franciscan University, you'll grow in mind, body, and spirit through the integration of faith and reason.

In your journey through college life, remember that it takes time to develop into the person that God wants you to become.

"For a stalk to grow or a flower to open there must be time that cannot be forced; nine months must go by for the birth of a human child; to write a book or compose music often years must be dedicated to patient research...To find the mystery there must be patience, interior purification, silence, waiting..."
-Pope John Paul II

Along with this thoughtful information for beginning the next stage in your life, you will note that there are three words highlighted in blue.  Write down the three words - in order - on your quest form under Clue 1.

JPII Library Quest-Step 2

  • Log on to one of the Research Computers by using your Franciscan email user name and password.

  • At the top of the library home page, click on the tab that says Articles/Journals

  • Then click on the link at the bottom of the page that says Electronic Journal Center (EJC)

Using the keyword search, you will type in the answer from Clue 1.

  • Once you find the article-click on the title.  This will take you to a description of the article.
  • Then click on the PDF full text icon.

On the first page of the article, there is a description of Saint Clare having a vision.  On what day and year did this vision occur?  Write down this information on your quest form under Clue 2.

JPII Library Quest- Step 3

In order to discover the identity of this Franciscan University icon, you will need to log on to the library home page.

Once there, you will click on the tab at the top of the page that says "Books."

Search under keyword for an illustrated history of Franciscan University of Steubenville

  • On your quest form, write down the entire title of the book under Clue 3.

  • When looking at the record, you will notice that under location- two of the books show the location as "FRANCISCAN RES. DAILY".  This means that the books are being held on the reserve shelf at the Circulation Desk.

  • Go the the Circulation Desk and ask for the title of the book under the Faculty name of "Library Quest".

  •  Look in the table of contents for the Chronology of Franciscan University of Steubenville.  On the first page of this chronology, you will notice that in the same month that St. Clair had her vision (Clue 2) this famous person opened the doors to the College of Steubenville.  Who was this famous person?

Write down the answer on your quest form under Clue 4.

JPII Library Quest-Final Step

You now know the name of the famous person in this quest!

However, you are not quite finished.  You must now answer the last question in order to finish this quest.

There is a memorial to this person somewhere in the library - where is it located?  (Remember, in may ways this person was "a head" of their time.)

Write your answer under Clue 5 and turn in your Quest form to a staff member at the Circulation desk. You will then receive a treat for all of your hard effort!

The drawing for the four gift cards from the book store will be held on Wednesday, September 11. If you are a winner, you will be notified through your Franciscan email account after 1pm.
